Jewell Town Pottery is partnering with Raku artist Nate Winter of Nate Winter Studios for an immersive weekend of kiln building, glaze chemistry, wheel throwing demos, and Western Raku firing.
Over two full workshop days, you'll help build a working Raku kiln from scratch, glaze your own bisque ware, and experience the excitement of firing your pieces outdoors. Whether you're new to pottery, new to Raku, or have attended firings before, this is an opportunity to explore the process step by step.
Friday, May 21: Artist Talk, Cocktail Hour & Meet & Greet · 6:00–8:00 PM
Kick off the weekend with a relaxed cocktail-hour-style gathering with Nate, fellow participants, and the local community. Enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres while learning more about Nate's work, Raku practice, and upcoming projects, with plenty of time to hang out, connect, and ask questions. Free and open to the public. Bring a friend!
Saturday, May 22: Kiln Building, Glaze Chemistry, Glazing & Wheel Demonstration · 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
Help build a Raku kiln from the ground up and learn how the system works. Nate will also present his glaze chemistry research on the color spectrum of copper carbonate-based glazes, followed by glazing instruction and a wheel-throwing demonstration. You'll then glaze and prepare your bisque-fired pieces for Sunday's firing.
Sunday, May 23: Raku Firing & Smoke-Firing Techniques · 9:00 AM–6:00 PM
The main event. Spend the day firing your work while exploring Western Raku firing techniques, Obvara (AKA Baltic Raku), and smoke-firing processes using horsehair, sugar, and feathers. Take home your finished pieces and a deeper understanding of the techniques behind them.
Friday's artist talk, cocktail hour, and meet & greet is free and open to the public.
Workshop registration includes instruction across both full workshop days. Raku glazes and wax resist will be provided for the workshop.
Students are responsible for creating or acquiring their own pottery and having all pieces bisque fired at their own expense prior to the workshop.
Participants may bring up to 6 bisque-fired pieces, each no larger than approximately 6 cubic inches. Larger pieces may count as two and must be approved in advance.
For an additional $1,250, participants can build and take home a complete Raku kiln package. The package will be fully equipped with the necessary components to begin firing independently after the workshop.
Nate will guide you through the kiln-building process and train you during the workshop on its setup, operation, and safe firing practices so you can confidently continue working with your kiln afterward.
Nate Winter is a ceramic artist, educator, and musician based in Southern Maine. He holds bachelor's degrees in Fine Art and Business Management from Saint Joseph's College of Maine, graduating in 2017 with an Award of Excellence. Nate specializes in Raku firing and high-end functional pottery, blending traditional methods with contemporary design, and has completed more than 1,000 Raku firings over 13+ years of practice. His work draws on the textures and light of Maine's coastal and forest landscapes.
Beyond his studio practice, Nate teaches through private workshops, kiln-building classes, and an online Raku firing course, and his pottery has reached customers in more than 30 states. His online platforms have drawn over 50 million views and 150,000+ followers across social media.
