Faceted and Altered Tea Bowls in Porcelain

Dwayne Sackey is a Portland, Oregon–based ceramic artist and educator. He earned his BFA in Ceramics from Oregon College of Art and Craft and was the recipient of a Studio Potter Apprenticeship Grant, studying under Chris Baskin. His work has been featured in exhibitions across the country.
Dwayne will focus on the techniques and structural thinking behind faceting, altering, and refining thrown forms, with particular attention to creating intentional movement, proportion, and surface. Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, we’ll explore how subtle changes to a thrown form can completely transform its character.
Working in porcelain, we’ll look closely at the relationship between form and material, learning how to make deliberate alterations while maintaining control of the clay. Dwayne will share his approach to creating faceted and altered tea bowls, while encouraging participants to experiment and develop their own visual language.

Throwing Bigger: Form, Scale & Structure

This workshop is about pushing your wheel work beyond its comfortable limits.
Brian will focus on the techniques and structural thinking behind throwing taller, wider, and larger forms, including throwing off the hump, managing clay at greater scale, and understanding the forces that can cause larger forms to twist, buckle, or lose their shape.
Through demonstrations and hands-on practice, we'll explore how to work with more clay, build height and width with intention, and troubleshoot the challenges that come with increasing scale.

Raku Firing and Kiln Building

Jewell Town Pottery is partnering with Raku artist Nate Winter of Nate Winter Studios for an immersive weekend of kiln building, glaze chemistry, wheel throwing demos, and Western Raku firing.
Over two full workshop days, you'll help build a working Raku kiln from scratch, glaze your own bisque ware, and experience the excitement of firing your pieces outdoors. Whether you're new to pottery, new to Raku, or have attended firings before, this is an opportunity to explore the process step by step.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1950, Matsuzaki studied ceramic art at Tamagawa University School of Fine Arts before moving to Mashiko in 1972 to begin a five-year apprenticeship with Tatsuzo Shimaoka. After completing his training, he established his own studio and kiln, Yuushin Gama, near Shimaoka's in Mashiko.

Kathy King is an active studio artist in the Boston area, an instructor, and the Director of the Ceramics Program and Visual Arts Initiatives at Harvard's Office for the Arts. Before returning to Boston in 2008, she was an Associate Professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.

Tori Motyl is a Vermont-based ceramic artist whose work centers on oversized terracotta vessels. Originally from Rochester, New York, Tori built her ceramics practice in Asheville, North Carolina, before relocating to Vermont. Her journey began with functional dinnerware before evolving into large-scale vessels that explore presence, scale, and quiet simplicity. She apprenticed at The Village Potters Clay Center and has worked alongside established ceramic artists throughout her career.

Ashton Keen is a ceramic artist and educator based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and an instructor and Artist-in-Residence with the Ceramics Program at Harvard University’s Office for the Arts. She earned her BFA from the University of Mississippi and MFA from Utah State University, and previously interned at STARworks Center for Creative Enterprise. Her work has been featured in national exhibitions and recognized with numerous awards, including selection as a Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist in 2024.

Nate Winter is a Southern Maine–based ceramic artist, educator, and musician specializing in Raku and high-end functional ceramics. He holds bachelor’s degrees in Fine Art and Business Management from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine and has more than 13 years of experience working with clay, including over 1,000 Raku firings. His work combines traditional techniques with contemporary design, drawing inspiration from the rugged landscapes and changing seasons of Maine. Nate is also an educator, sharing his expertise through Raku firing workshops, kiln building, and online ceramics education.
